Nidhi N Desai

M.D. Class of 2020

Hometown: Tallahassee, Fla.
Undergraduate Degree: Florida State University

Nidhi graduated summa cum laude from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science in exercise science and a minor in chemistry. During her undergraduate education, Nidhi was involved in organizations such as the Honors Medical Scholars Society, USSTRIDE and the Indian Students' Association. As an active member of these organizations, she was able to take a clinical assisting course, join FSU medical students on a medical outreach trip to Nicaragua, and mentor middle and high school students in nearby disadvantaged schools. She also volunteered in the community through Project Downtown and Big Bend Hospice, which exposed her to various populations and situations. Through these experiences, the idea that health care had become a commodity impacted Nidhi significantly. Additionally, her shadowing opportunities with primary-care physicians highlighted the importance of continuity of care locally and globally and the joy that came along with it. To expand her knowledge on the nonscientific side of medicine, Nidhi participated in research in medical sociology dealing with pain management on university campuses. She chose the FSU College of Medicine because it focused on the importance of making health care available to everyone, especially to disadvantaged communities.
