The mission of
the Department of Medical Humanities and Social Sciences (MHSS)
is to represent the psychosocial components of the
biopsychosocial model in medical education, patient care, and
research. As one of two basic science departments, MHSS is
expected to be a leader in the creation of new knowledge with an
emphasis on multidisciplinary, applied research with health
provider and patient populations.
The College of Medicine and MHSS are committed to an integrated
medical school curriculum. The MHSS Behavioral Science
Curriculum Director (Dr. Reyes) sits on the College of
Medicine’s curriculum committee and admissions committee. MHSS
faculty serve as course directors, research mentors, offer
electives, participate in curriculum development, test writing,
lecturing, facilitate small groups with their physician faculty
colleagues, and model a multidisciplinary treatment team
approach to patient care.
