Faculty and Staff

Roger Mercer, PhD
Director Roger Mercer is responsible for the overall development, management, and operation of the laboratory, including facility and computational infrastructure, instrument acquisition and management, and information management. He earned his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry (gas phase ion chemistry) with Alex Harrison at the University of Toronto and has more than 30 years of experience with analytical chemistry, including biological mass spectrometry and proteomics in academic, governmental and corporate settings.

Yanming Yang, PhD
Yanming Yang is responsible for Next-Generation sequencing services, bioinformatics systems administration and oversight of COM hardware at the High Performance Computing Center, data storage management, and data analysis including bioinformatics tools deployment and algorithm facilitation. He holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from University of Arkansas and an MS in Computer Engineering from University of Florida, and has over 10 years of experience in computing system administration and data analysis.

  Rakesh Singh, PhD
Rakesh Singh is responsible for end-to-end processing of proteomic samples. He helps end users develop appropriate experimental strategies to maximize the out come and his background in cell biology is especially relevant in the preparation of "difficult" samples. Rakesh will train customers and students in the principles of instrumentation and analysis used in their projects and he manages the scheduling of the user group meetings.  He earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from University of Mumbai, India in 2006 and worked on histone proteolysis as a postdoctoral fellow at FSU College of Medicine until 2012. He attended proteomics training at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York, in 2011.

  Huan He, PhD
Huan He, affiliated with the FSU Institute of Molecular Biophysics, operates the Waters XEVO TQS MS for small molecule quantification. She also develops methods for metabolite identification/quantification and protein complex characterization using native MS and hydrogen/deuterium exchange (HDX). She got her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry and pursued her postdoctoral training with Dr. Alan Marshall at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. She has close to 10 years of experience with MS in biological applications. Before getting her Ph.D., she was a medicinal chemist at Bristol-Myers Squibb.
Cynthia Vied, PhD  Cynthia (Cindy) Vied is responsible for the pipeline upstream and downstream of our HiSeq workflows. She has extensive experience in Next-Generation Sequencing sample prep and data analysis and provides consultation regarding project scope, design and implementation, as well as data analysis. Cindy obtained her Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and was a postdoctoral researcher and research associate at Columbia University prior to joining the FSU College of Medicine in 2010.

All staff members are hands-on scientists who will provide Translational Science Laboratory users with:

  • Consultation on projects
  • Collaboration with method development
  • Materials to get started
  • Assistance with analysis of results
  • Training in experimental methods
