American Medical Women's Association

"The Vision & Voice of Women in Medicine"

The American Medical Women's Association is a national organization that is dedicated to promoting women's health, improving the professional development and personal well-being of its members, and increasing the influence of women in all aspects of the medical profession.

This past year AMWA was very active as an RSO on campus, facilitating interest in several areas of awareness efforts and providing opportunities for mentoring at all levels of training. AMWA hosted events addressing the psychological and social issues surrounding breast cancer for both survivors and providers, domestic violence and the Clothesline Project, and the anti-trafficking movement in the state of Florida. They set up a formal mentoring program between medical and undergraduate students and held a Women in Medicine event in which a safe space was created for medical students and a diverse group of female physicians to discuss issues and share personal experience related to women in medicine. In addition, our students attended and presented research at the 2017 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA where Danielle Guinan was awarded 2nd place for her research about medical students' anxiety. Examples of other past activities include close ties with the local domestic violence shelter, fundraising for Komen's Passionately Pink Campaign, FSU COM's "Most Creative Event" Award for Tutus for Tatas, participation at the National AMWA conference in San Francisco, CA, as well as providing education to over 100 people about cervical cancer prevention.

FSU's AMWA members are active at the national level:

  • FSUCOM AMWA chapter advisor Suzanne Harrison M.D. is National AMWA President
  • Preventive Medicine Task Force: Ashley Kreher (M1) and Tracey Cook (M3)
  • Physicians Against the Trafficking of Humans (PATH) Task Force: FSUCOM graduate Yaowaree "Noona" Leavell, Ally Davis (M2), and Trevia Jackson (M1)
