Geriatric Clerkship

Primary Care Geriatrics BCC 7174 is a four week clerkship is designed to provide the medical student with an in-depth exposure to the intricacies, subtleties, barriers and obstacles to high quality primary medical care for older adults in available settings throughout the community. Under the guidance, direction and supervision of selected geriatric practitioners, the student on this rotation has the opportunity to participate in the care of older patients in ambulatory, acute inpatient, nursing facility, rehabilitation center and assisted living facility sites. The required 4th year clerkship strives to be the capstone geriatric experience meeting the expressed individual needs of each student in achieving basic performance proficiencies consistent with the AAMC and John A. Hartford Foundation Consensus graduating medical student minimum competencies and our own Reynolds grant principles and syndrome competencies. An important component of this experience is the expectation that each student follow at least 2 patients across transitions in their sites of care. Management of patients across transitions is an essential curricular component of our Chronic Disease Management curriculum initiative as well as a requisite component of geriatric training.

During the Geriatric Rotation students are required to do a presentation on a geriatric topic consisting of a minimum of ten slides. These are a few samples of what the 2008-2009 students have done. Please enjoy!
