Research & Scholarly Activity

Research and scholarly activity is a prominent focus in the department. Faculty collaborate with students, faculty in other departments, and the COM Office of Medicine Education to create descriptive presentations and scholarly reviews and regularly present at national and regional meetings. Selected departmental medical education research projects include:

  1. High Fidelity Simulators and Standardized Patients to Develop Clinical Thinking
  2. The Post-baccalaureate Bridge Program: Student Success
  3. Domestic violence training: Do students recognize abuse/violence?
  4. Characteristics of primary care physicians that graduate from FSU COM
  5. Medical students and Empathy
  6. Obesity, culture, and weight loss

The FSUCOM has over 1500 community physicians across the state and is reaching out to these physicians to build a Clinical Research Network. Our plan is to develop a network of interested physicians that will go far beyond a traditional practice-based research network (PBRN) in that it will include a wide range of specialties and sub-specialties and will function as a bilateral exchange of research ideas. Department faculty also serve as research mentors for the post-baccalaureate Bridge Program, are research mentors for the FSU COM Summer Research Fellowship, and assist with the AHEC summer research program. The department also offers a fourth-year month long structured research elective.
