Master’s Training in Autism Spectrum Specialization, Education and Training (ASSET)

The School of Communication Science and Disorders with grants from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs, trains interdisciplinary service providers, SLPs and SpEd teachers, to be highly qualified to work with students with ASD with ASSET.  Over the past 8 years, more than 90 students have graduated with their master’s degree and specialized knowledge and skills to work with students with ASD by completing a competency based training program that met the requirements for an Autism endorsement through the FL Teacher certification program.  In addition to the 90+ students that were funded, more than 400 students participated in the on campus and distance learning coursework that would allow them to also gain the endorsement for FL. ASSET continues to train SLPs as autism specialists combining coursework, community-based practicum, research participation and family experiences into a rigorous competency based specialization.
