Born in Dothan, Alabama, Tucker was the second of two children born to Wayne Retherford and Terri Hammond. He grew up in Bonifay, Florida, where he attended Holmes County High School. He graduated summa cum laude from Troy University with a bachelor's in biology and a concentration in biomedical sciences. During his undergrad he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon social fraternity, in which he held three officer positions and three chairman positions. Tucker was also a member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society, Omicron Delta Kappa honor and leadership society, the Order of Omega, Pi Mu Epsilon math society, and Alpha Lambda Delta honor society for freshmen. During his senior year at Troy he served as a research assistant for Dr. Zhiyong Wang, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Physics. Research involved two areas: performing organic reactions to synthesize molecules that could work as either antidepressants or reagents for labeling proteins. He also maintained a committee position with the Holmes Creek Longspurs chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, while away from home. Tucker wishes to return home to Bonifay after completing his education, practicing in primary care.
