with a $1.2 million Geriatric Education Center grant
involving departments at Florida State University, Florida
A&M University and the University of South Alabama.

American Geriatric Society Member News
AGS member and Geriatric Faculty Member at Florida State
University, College of Medicine Rosemary Laird, MD, was
among the ten fellows selected to participate in the
prestigious Practice Change Fellows program supported by the
Atlantic Philanthropies. The program - under the direction
of AGS member, Eric A. Coleman, MD, of the University of
Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center, and the
co-direction of Nancy Whitelaw, PhD, of the National Council
on Aging (NCOA) - is aimed at building leadership capacity
among nurses, physicians, and social workers who have
operational responsibility for geriatric care. Through the
two-year program, fellows will receive $90,000 and the
support of local and national mentors to further develop
their leadership skills and to complete a project
implementing a new geriatric service line or aging program.
The Practice Change Fellows program aims to create a network
of specialists dedicated to influencing healthcare delivery
and improving the health of older adults.

Grant Benefits Geriatrics Training at the FSU College
of Medicine Elderly
people consume almost 40 percent of all health
care services in
this country, but in most cases, the elderly do not see a
geriatrician when they visit the doctor.
That’s one reason the Florida State University College
of Medicine strives to instill the principles of geriatric
medicine in all of its students, regardless of their
likelihood of specializing in geriatric health care. Now,
with a $2 million grant from the
Donald
W. Reynolds Foundation, the College of Medicine plans to
expand its curriculum to teach principles of geriatrics care
that can be applied across the lifespan.
The college is one of 10 medical schools nationwide to win a
Reynolds Foundation grant this year. The Donald W. Reynolds
Foundation is a national philanthropic organization founded in 1954
by the late media entrepreneur for whom it is named. Headquartered
in Las Vegas, it is one of the largest private foundations in the

The Live Oak Geriatric Education Center (LOGEC) was
established in 2005 as a collaborative effort of experts at
Florida State University, Florida A&M University, and the
University of South Alabama. On January 27, 2007 the Archbold
Medical Center and
Live Oak Geriatric Education Center hosted a one-day
conference titled “The Dizzy Patient Who Falls: Vestibular
Function, Falls and Older Adults” in Thomasville, Georgia.
Presenters included faculty from Florida State University and
Florida A & M University.
