Job Description
Dr. Brummel-Smith holds the Charlotte Edwards Maguire Professorship in the College of Medicine. He leads the Department of Geriatrics, one of five academic departments in the FSU College of Medicine. Geriatrics is one of the priority areas in the college's mission.
Biosketch
Prior to coming to the FSU College of Medicine as the founding chair of the Department of Geriatrics, Dr. Brummel-Smith served as the medical director to the PACE Elderplace program in Portland, Ore. He also served as Bain Chair of the Providence Center on Aging and as professor of family medicine at the Oregon Health Sciences University. He has served as the Section Chief for Geriatrics, Department of Family Medicine at University of Southern California, and Division Chief, Geriatrics, Department of Medicine, Oregon Health Sciences University. He is a past president of the American Geriatrics Society. He is also a member of the National Advisory Council on Aging at the National Institute on Aging. He is the chair of the Association of Directors of Geriatric Academic Programs. He has been selected by his peers 11 times as one of the Best Doctors in America.

Research Focus
Dr. Brummel-Smith's research has addressed the effect of a support group on caregivers of patients with Alzheimer’s disease, the effect of routinely discussing preferences for CPR upon admission to a rehabilitation hospital, methods of assessing pain in persons with Alzheimer’s disease, outcomes of end-of-life care planning in frail elders, and the use of the Physician Orders for Life-sustaining Treatment (POLST) form in advance-care planning.
